I also think it's important to not dismiss certain decisions as "lazy". I'm not lazy. I just don't think the time sink required to convert my comics to the scroll is worth the ROI, Especially when most traditional manga is still read as full pages even digitally.
Absolutely! I can only speak for my own "laziness", or rather maybe it's more of "I have other priorities that need to get done more and I'd rather not do this thing". For sure, I think everyone has their own priorities and goals and can make any path work.
And besides, if you look at what some of the other comic reader apps are doing, they're still using the full page layout and it works well too! I think I mentioned my favorite way to read comics digitally is through the SJ app. The pages look real good and are pretty readable for the most part. For me, I just knew that my pages looked kinda small on a phone screen, so I needed to update them.
I'm looking forward to seeing Egoraven on Webtoons!
This! I tried converting to vertical scroll for a few months and the results I got in terms of audience wasn't worth the hours I was spending to reformat each page.
I've been debating on whether or not I want to convert my pages to vertical scroll (again), but back when I did and I tried posting them on Webtoon, it didn't seem worth the effort. I'd spend hours on one page trying to lay everything out, post the comic there and then get maybe like 1 or 2 views and that's about it. I tried for like half a year and my audience didn't really grow beyond maybe like 30 readers who weren't even particularly active so then I gave up 😂
It's the least I can do! Best of luck with the campaign.
Yeah, Webtoons is weird, and they certainly love their specific genres. I think it's at least worth converting my pages for my website so it looks good on a mobile device, but the desktop version is still the regular pages. I may take the vertical scroll version to other platforms like GlobalComix or dReader as well. I figure if I chop it up once, there's the option to use it multiple times.
I've always had my comics available on my website, but I've expanded to inclue Webtoons. The only thing I'm not doing is formatting for the scroll. I had EGORAVEN on Webtoon before and didn't feel the effort to convert to scrolling was worth the effort. I have been reading a lot of manga on my phone and they're the full pages. When I decided to return EGORAVEN to Webtoon, I felt it was more important for it to be in color than scrolling. The important thing for me is to make sure EGORAVEN is available digitally for free and making it easy for people to buy which means optimising my store and the reader's access to it.
Is it possible to add stuff to webtoon without catering to vertical scroll? Does it let you post episodes that aren’t within their 800 x 1200 or whatever size constraint?
It is possible, but make sure your pages still show up good on mobile and you can read the text, that's the most important thing. Webtoon readers are finicky, and they have the genres they like, but it can be possible with a good comic to garner a small fan base still.
The constraints of 800x1200 are per file/panel you upload. So you can upload multiple files that are 800 width into one episode. And that width is really the most important constraint -- it's a size that generally looks good on all mobile devices and will scale well. So you can be smaller if need be, but I wouldn't go too small! Again, legibility is what is key here!

Thank you! The fifth chapter uploaded yesterday. It'll take a bit to get any momentum on Webtoon but at least it's there.

Excited to see Black Ball on here if you bring it!
Thank you for the shout out!

Or in a year I may drop the whole thing! :D
