Lettering first was a game-changer for me. It allows one to be thoughtful about allowing those words to float to the top of the panel (where they should be) and then you're left with the actual real estate to draw (rather than being surprised when words occupy a big chunk of any given panel). Glad to hear you're moving in this direction! Here's to healthy habits in the new year! Awesome update, MJ!

Thanks, Ryan! I'm still figuring out how to streamline the production (my last comic I had to letter TWICE because CSP is not friendly with the crossbar I in some of my fonts) but it really has made life so much easier! No more cut off or awkward speech bubbles for me! No more covering up a ton of art I spent hours on! I am a whole new artist!

I also came here to say lettering first is the way to go. I've been doing that since the dawn of my comic making days otherwise, I'd end up with word balloons taking up an entire panel and blocking the art XD Knowing exactly how much space the lettering is going to take up helps me edit myself so much better.

Also congrats on the new job! I'm one of those "a new year isn't a reset button" people but I do like using the new year as a measure of progress, if that makes sense.
