Hey there, cool kid!
On Monday morning I woke up with a sore throat. Since Dr. Husband was the one who gave it to me, and he only needed one day to sleep it off, I figured that I’d be good to go in no time.
I was dreadfully wrong.
And even when I thought I turned a corner on Friday and was feeling a little better, I woke up early Saturday with a fever and trouble breathing. Lovely.
Thankfully I’m now actually recovering and have come back from the dead to catch up on all the stuff I didn’t get to do.
I spent most of the time being very foggy in the head, so I didn’t really get to do too much, but I did get to read and watch a couple things when I was feeling clear enough. Here’s some of my adventures from my recliner chair from the past week.
The Real Last Episode of Sailor Moon S I Didn’t Know Existed
On Friday I was more awake than the other days, so I went onto Amazon Prime to find something to watch and apparently, they have their own live streaming channels, similar to the Roku, and one of them was playing the original 90s Sailor Moon S, my favorite season. It was also getting towards the last few episodes where they face off with the big bad Mistress 9, my favorite villain. I had never seen the subtitled version before, so I spent the afternoon enjoying the nostalgia. For the most part, the animation has aged pretty well and the show still looks great. There’s a reason that this version is considered one of the quintessential anime of the 90s.
So the last episode of the season ends as Sailor Uranus and Neptune drive off into the sunset, having completed their goal to save the world from silence and getting out of here before they get roped into the next season, Super S. So imagine my surprise when an episode preview runs for the next episode…one I do not remember seeing!
The episode itself is nothing really to write home about. Now with the threat neutralized, Chibi-Usa gets a letter from the future asking her to come home, they throw a goodbye party and then there’s one last monster of the week that survived. Considering that Chibi-Usa is my least favorite character, I found it pretty annoying the team couldn’t do anything against a regular mook until she showed up.
I don’t know if this episode never made it to the original dub or I just missed it on TV, and while it felt a little extraneous, it was neat to see something I hadn’t before from a series I enjoyed as a kid.
Diving back in to Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne
One night I couldn’t sleep so I decided to get in some reading. Arina Tanemura is one of my favorite manga artists, but I’ve only read through the whole of Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne once. I had the first two volumes of the original CMX run as a kid, and a few years ago I bought the new editions of the full series for myself as a birthday gift to finally read the whole thing.
By day, Maron is an ordinary high school girl with more than her share of problems, but by night, she is Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne--the reincarnation of Joan of Arc, who hunts down demon-possessed paintings and exorcises the evil spirits. And since this is Arina Tanemura, there’s tons of drama and romance. So far I’ve gotten into volume 2 and I don’t 100% remember everything that happens from here on out so I’m excited to be diving back in. I’ve only read the whole series through once, so it should be fun!
It’s Tanemura-sensei’s older, rounder style, but the art is still very pretty and the page layouts airy and full of free-flowing art. I always enjoy reading one of her series or looking through my two artbooks for her work. I wish there were more!
While my favorite of her series is a tie between Full Moon wo Sageshite and The Gentlemen’s Alliance Cross, I am really enjoying Jeanne and am glad to be giving the series another look.
And Another Manga for the Road…
I also reread the first volume of the Revolutionary Girl Utena manga. It’s kind of wild seeing the characters in a different story from the anime — the two versions are quite different from each other, with the manga being a more grounded shoujo fantasy and the anime being…well it’s the Evangelion of shoujo for a reason.
Chiho Saito’s art is very beautiful and classic, which makes the manga a joy to read. Sadly, I am missing volumes 2 and 3 from my collection, and I also missed out on the special edition reprinting from a few years ago. I still keep looking hoping I’ll find a set that isn’t $700…

Boston Metaphysical Society: Vol. 2 Special Edition Hardback by Madeliene Holly-Rosing
If you are new to the series, the original six issue mini-series is about an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800’s Boston. They live in an alternate steampunk history where ghosts and demons are a normal part of life. Families known as the Great Houses control the economy of the Great States of America while the middle class and lower classes sole purpose are to serve the Great Houses. The four sequels, Scourge of the Mechanical Men, The Spirit of Rebellion, Ghosts and Demons, and The Book of Demons are all included in this Vol. 2 Special Edition. And look at how slick that volume is!
Time to catch up and get back to work! That AMA is coming too, just need to be less mucusy so I don’t sound silly on camera. Or have a red nose.
Till the next time,
Melissa J
Great read. I didn't know about the lost sailormoon episode. I was an avid fan in the 90s and got most of my comic influences from there in the beginning.
